MANILA, Philippines — A complete of 30,159 inmates within the seven prisons and penal farms beneath the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) have had their gang tattoos eliminated beneath the “Oplan Bura Tatak” program as their approach of renouncing their group affiliations.
“That is our New 12 months’s present to President Duterte and the nation,” BuCor spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag informed the Inquirer on Tuesday.
Chaclag mentioned the inmates “agreed” to have their gang marks erased beneath this system aimed toward preserving peace and order in correction amenities, together with New Bilibid Jail.
The vast majority of those that took half in this system that ended on Dec. 24 have been from New Bilibid Jail. A complete of twenty-two,526, or nearly 80 p.c, of the over 28,000 inmates at Bilibid volunteered to have their gang tattoos eliminated or hid to suggest that they now not belonged to any group.
On the most safety compound housing these convicted of heinous crimes, 14,388 prisoners bought their tattoos erased, together with the 167 leaders of the 12 main gangs at Bilibid.
“[The Bilibid maximum security compound] is jail gang-free at current,” Chaclag mentioned.
Others have been from the medium (7,480) and minimal (183) safety compounds, and 475 from the Reception and Diagnostics Middle.
