After spending nine years trying to break into the tattooing industry while in school, Xia received her last apprenticeship in South Korea. And that’s once I drew my first bat.

I had to wait a while before someone took the design. People in Northern Australia don’t usually follow bats (they are called flying rats), but when I saw it, I felt comfortable. I still remember that I had fun getting the tattoo.

Xia knows that not everyone loves bats the same way. Some of her clients have a strong dislike for them, and she spends a lot time trying to help these people. “Bats face quite a lot of discrimination as persons are utterly unaware that they’re the primary pollinators along with bees right here in Australia,” Xia says. “After I lived in northern Australia, I had a consumer who hates bats with a ardour. The woman informed me that most bats will choose a tree to spoil and she didn’t know how.
